State Minister for Youth and Sports, Mohammad Aminul Haque, inaugurated the Inter-University Athletics and Basketball Competition 2026 at Islamic University on Monday.

The ceremony was held at the university's central athletics ground, where the minister, as chief guest, formally declared the tournament open. The competition, running from 4 to 6 May, has attracted participation from 21 universities. Athletes are competing in both men's and women's athletics events, while the basketball segment features men's teams.

In his address, Aminul outlined the government's strategic focus on strengthening the sporting landscape across the country. He noted that 300 athletes have already been brought under financial support through stipends and sports cards, reflecting a structured approach to athlete development.

Emphasising grassroots engagement, the minister referred to the launch of the 'Notun Kuri Sports' initiative on 2 May, which is set to be expanded to union level in the next financial year. He remarked that inter-school, college and university competitions play a crucial role in identifying emerging talent, where participation and the development of skills take precedence over results.

Aminul also highlighted the importance of modern sports science, including sports medicine and sports psychology, reaffirming the government's commitment to building a disciplined and sports-oriented nation.

The event was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Nakib Mohammad Nasrullah, university officials and local administrators adding further distinction to the opening ceremony.
