Secretary General of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Principal Hafez Maulana Yunus Ahmad, on Tuesday warned against any move to raise electricity tariffs, saying such a step would further deepen the hardships of people already grappling with high living costs.
Speaking at a regular party meeting at the organisation's central office, he said persistent inflation, rising fuel prices and escalating household expenses have placed immense pressure on citizens, while income levels have remained largely stagnant.
"At a time when people are already overwhelmed by financial strain, any further increase in electricity tariffs would make daily life unbearable," he said.
The Islami Andolan leader also criticised what he termed systemic inefficiencies and policy shortcomings in the power sector, alleging that large-scale wastage and weak management have driven up government expenditure.
He said the burden of policy failures should not be passed on to consumers through higher electricity bills.
Yunus Ahmad urged the government to focus on reforms in the power and energy sector, improve management systems and strengthen revenue collection instead of imposing additional financial pressure on the public.
The meeting was attended by several senior party leaders, including Joint Secretary General and spokesperson Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman, Engineer Ashraful Alam, Maulana Sheikh Fazle Bari Masud, Ahmad Abdul Qayyum, KM Atikur Rahman, among others.
