Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman on Monday convened a high level meeting to discuss strategies aimed at improving the livelihoods of salt farmers across the country, with a particular focus on ensuring fair market prices for their produce.

The meeting took place at the PM’s Office in the Secretariat, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Press Wing.

Participants reviewed the current challenges facing salt growers and explored policy options to strengthen their income security. Ensuring that farmers receive reasonable and stable prices for salt was highlighted as a priority, alongside broader initiatives to enhance their overall living standards.

Senior government officials attended the discussion, including Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir. Finance and Planning Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Finance Secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder, Industries Secretary Md Obaidur Rahman, and Additional Commerce Secretary Abdur Rahim Khan were also present.

Md Saiful Islam, Chairman of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation, joined the meeting along with other relevant officials.

The government is expected to consider follow up measures based on the discussions to strengthen support for salt farmers, a key group within the country’s coastal economy.
