Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman has called on member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to step up collective action in addressing the protracted Rohingya crisis, emphasising the need for stronger engagement from the Muslim world.
He made the appeal during a meeting on Tuesday at the Secretariat, where ambassadors and high commissioners from OIC countries stationed in Dhaka paid a courtesy call on the PM.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Press Wing, Tarique sought enhanced diplomatic and humanitarian support from the bloc to help resolve the crisis.
During the meeting, OIC envoys congratulated Tarique Rahman on taking office as the Prime Minister and reiterated their governments’ commitment to deepening cooperation with Bangladesh.
They highlighted opportunities to expand partnerships in trade, investment, education, healthcare, textiles and pharmaceuticals, and reaffirmed support for Bangladesh on regional and global issues.
The Prime Minister thanked the representatives for their continued engagement and assistance. He recalled the strong ties developed with OIC nations during the tenure of former President Ziaur Rahman and expressed confidence that those relationships would grow further.
Tarique Rahman, who also chairs the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, underscored the importance of strengthening people to people connections among OIC countries to reinforce solidarity and mutual development.
Diplomats attending the meeting represented Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Palestine, Algeria, Brunei, Egypt, Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, the Maldives, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, along with heads of mission from Iran, Iraq and Libya.
Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir, Foreign Ministry Secretary for Intergovernmental Organisations M Forhadul Islam and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon were also present.
