A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is set to influence country’s weather over the next five days, bringing thunderstorms, gusty winds and heavy rainfall to several regions while a mild heatwave continues in parts of the country.
According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay currently remains as a depression.
Another extension of low pressure is active over West Bengal and nearby areas. Due to this synoptic condition, rain and thunderstorms are likely in different divisions of the country through May 20.
BMD said a mild heatwave is currently sweeping over Madaripur, Laxmipur, Rajshahi, Pabna and the entire Khulna division, and the condition may continue in the coming days.
From Saturday evening through the next 24 hours, many places in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning.
Isolated rainfall is also likely in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions. Mymensingh and Sylhet could receive moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall. Day temperatures may rise slightly, while night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
On Sunday, thunderstorms and rain are expected in many areas of Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, with scattered showers in Rangpur and Dhaka divisions.
Some areas in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram may also receive rainfall. Heavy downpours are possible in Mymensingh and Sylhet. Temperatures may increase slightly during both day and night.
Rainfall activity is likely to continue on Monday in Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, along with parts of Rangpur and Dhaka.
Isolated showers may occur in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions. Heavy rainfall remains possible in Mymensingh and Sylhet, while temperatures are expected to stay nearly unchanged.
On Tuesday, several areas in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may experience thunderstorms with gusty winds and lightning.
Light to moderate rain is also likely in parts of Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal. Sylhet may again receive heavy rainfall, while day temperatures could fall slightly.
By Wednesday, many places in Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions are forecast to receive rain or thunderstorms, while scattered rainfall is also likely in Rangpur, Rajshahi and Chattogram divisions.
Khulna and Barishal may see isolated showers. Heavy rainfall is possible in Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet, and temperatures across the country may decline slightly.
The met office also said the trend of rainfall in northern Bangladesh could continue beyond the five-day forecast period.
