A Dhaka court on Saturday showed former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque arrested in a fresh murder case filed over the killing of a protester during the anti-discrimination movement in the capital’s Jatrabari area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order after hearing a petition submitted by the investigation officer of the case, SI Ibrahim Khalil.
Khairul Haque has been in jail since his arrest from his Dhanmondi residence on July 24 last year.
Earlier, the High Court directed the authorities not to harass or show him arrested in any case without specific allegations against him. He had also secured bail in all seven cases filed previously, although the state later challenged the bail order through an appeal.
According to the case statement, Khobaib, a young protester, was killed in an attack and firing on demonstrators under the Jatrabari overbridge on August 5, 2024.
The victim’s brother filed the case on November 16, accusing 80 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana and Obaidul Quader.
