CHATTOGRAM, May 23: The panel of United Business Forum won all 24 director posts in the long-awaited biennial election of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) held on Saturday amid a boycott by rival panel Sammilito Byaboshayee Parishad.

After facing legal challenges and multiple delays, the election was held as originally scheduled.

Polling to elect 18 directors from the Ordinary and Associate Groups took place from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Agrabad World Trade Center in the city.

Earlier, the election had been postponed twice over disputes regarding voter inclusion.
CCCI has a total of 6,780 members, including 4,001 ordinary members and 2,764 associate members.

Two panels were initially in the race-one under the banner of United Business Forum and the other named Samamana Parishad. However, Samamana Parishad had earlier announced its boycott of the election.

Former FBCCI director Amirul Haque led the United Business Forum panel.
Earlier six directors have been elected unopposed. They are Mohammad Akhtar Parvez, Mohammad Amirul Haque and SM Saiful Alam from the Trade Group and Absar Hasan Chowdhury, Mohammad Monir Uddin and Mohammad Sajjad Un Nawaz from the Town Association Group.

There are a total of 24 director posts across four categories - 12 from the Ordinary Member category, six from the Associate Member category, three from the Trade Group, and three from the Town Association Group.

Currently, 36 candidates are contesting from Ordinary Group for 12 posts; 14 from Associate group for 6 posts; and 3 each from Trade group and Town Association group. Three each from Trade and Town Association group have been elected unopposed.

The total numbers of voters are 4001 in Ordinary group; 2764 in Associate Group; 5 in Town Association group and 10 in Trade group.

However, the monopoly of the long-dominant bloc was broken in August 2024, and since then the organization has been regaining vitality. The current election fervor is being seen as a reflection of that transformation.
