Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram stated on Wednesday that the public will never allow Awami League (activity banned) to engage in political activities in Bangladesh again, describing it as a corrupt and terrorist organization.
He noted that Awami League assumed state power solely to loot the country's wealth, with widespread allegations against its MPs and ministers of siphoning off money to build vast assets abroad. He added that reports revealed a state minister of the former fascist government owned over 200 houses overseas.
The Speaker made these remarks while addressing as the chief guest at a reception ceremony organized by Tozumuddin Upazila BNP and its associate bodies at the upazila parishad hall room on Wednesday (October 21). The event was arranged to honor him following his election as the Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Group (APG) of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
During the program, the Tozumuddin Upazila unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami also extended floral greetings and congratulations to the Speaker.
Highlighting past injustices in his constituency during the previous regime, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad mentioned that Tofail Ahmed was his rival candidate in the 2001 election. Following Tofail's defeat, Sheikh Hasina brought an outsider terrorist from Dhaka to contest future elections in the seat.
He further alleged that the individual amassed 500 bighas of land in Lalmohan and multiple houses in Dhaka through corruption, but ultimately fled the country with his family after August 5, leaving everything behind.
Assuring local residents of future development, the Speaker announced plans to upgrade Tozumuddin into a municipality and build a park along the banks of the Meghna River for public recreation. He also warned that no quarter would be given to terrorists.
Chaired by Tozumuddin Upazila BNP President Alhaj Golam Mostafa Mintu and moderated by General Secretary Alhaj Omar Asad Rintu, the event was addressed by leaders of BNP and its associate bodies. Local government officials, along with district and upazila-level leaders and activists, were present.
Earlier in the day, the Speaker held an exchange-of-views meeting with upazila government officials.
