Bangladesh and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have agreed to develop a new three year reform framework designed to align with the country’s evolving economic conditions and policy priorities.

The decision was reached during a virtual meeting on May 21 between Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and IMF Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke, according to an official statement.

Talks focused on Bangladesh’s current macroeconomic outlook, the status of reforms under the existing IMF supported arrangement, and the direction of future cooperation.

While reaffirming Dhaka’s commitment to maintaining macroeconomic stability and advancing structural reforms, the finance minister noted that the current programme was crafted under a different set of domestic and global circumstances.

He pointed out that shifting political economy dynamics and heightened global uncertainty have complicated the rollout of several agreed measures.

In light of these challenges, Chowdhury stressed the importance of pursuing reforms that are realistic, phased and consistent with Bangladesh’s institutional capacity.

The minister proposed that the newly elected government work with the IMF on a fresh three year programme that would sequence reforms in manageable stages, ensuring effective implementation.

Clarke welcomed the reform intentions outlined by the government and voiced confidence that continued constructive engagement would strengthen cooperation between the two sides.

Both parties agreed on the need for a practical and achievable programme and committed to advancing preparations without delay.

Chowdhury also referenced discussions held during the World Bank Group and IMF Spring Meetings 2026 in Washington, saying the government had since carried out internal assessments based on those exchanges.

The meeting concluded with a shared pledge to design and execute a reform plan capable of supporting Bangladesh’s economic stability and long term growth objectives.
