Bangladesh has secured an agreement to import more than 500000 tonnes of muriate of potash fertiliser from Russia in the 2026-27 fiscal year, strengthening agricultural cooperation between the two countries.

The deal was signed between Russia’s state trading enterprise Prodintorg and the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation.

Officials from both governments attended the signing ceremony, including Russian Ambassador Alexandr Khozin and representatives from the Russian Ministry of Agriculture and Prodintorg.

On the Bangladeshi side, Agriculture Secretary Dr Rafiqul I Mohamed and senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and BADC were present.

Under earlier arrangements, Bangladesh has been sourcing MOP fertiliser from Prodintorg for several years to support domestic crop production. The new agreement significantly expands that cooperation and ensures continued supply for the upcoming fiscal year.

According to the Russian Embassy in Dhaka, the latest deal represents the largest fertiliser agreement concluded under the framework of bilateral intergovernmental cooperation between Bangladesh and Russia.

Muriate of potash is a key nutrient used to improve soil fertility and boost crop yields, making it vital for Bangladesh’s food security and agricultural productivity.
