A tense situation has developed along the Bangladesh"India border following alleged push-in attempts by India’s Border Security Force (BSF), triggering heightened vigilance and repeated diplomatic engagements between the two border forces.
The issue is currently being discussed at the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)"BSF director general-level conference in New Delhi, which began on Monday and is scheduled to continue until June 11. The talks come amid growing concerns from Dhaka over alleged attempts to push undocumented individuals into Bangladesh through multiple border points without formal deportation procedures.
Jamalpur standoff leaves man in no-man’s land
Tensions flared most sharply in Jamalpur’s Bokshiganj upazila after an alleged push-in attempt left a 60-year-old man stranded in the zero line area.
According to BGB-35 Battalion Commander Lt Col Hasanur Rahman, the incident occurred around 5:00am on Wednesday at the Ramrampur border, when BSF personnel from the Nandirchar camp allegedly attempted to push the man into Bangladeshi territory.
BGB personnel and local residents intervened, blocking the attempt and forcing the man to retreat to the zero line, where he remained stranded.
A flag meeting held at around 10:30am between BGB and BSF officials failed to resolve the situation, according to local sources. The BSF reportedly left without taking the man back, leaving the standoff unresolved.
Residents said repeated attempts had been made over recent days to push the same man into Bangladesh, but local resistance prevented the transfer each time.
“We are standing with the BGB to resist such attempts,” said local resident Abdul Mannan.
Lt Col Rahman said efforts were made to resolve the issue through dialogue, but no agreement was reached, adding that BGB forces remain on high alert.
In Joypurhat, village police have joined BGB patrols in Panchbibi upazila, particularly in Dhalahar, Chakbarkat, Aymarsulpur, Dharanji and Bagjana unions, amid concerns over attempted fencing activities and alleged push-ins.
In Mymensingh and Sherpur, BGB has strengthened security by deploying additional manpower, intensifying 24-hour surveillance and expanding regular patrol operations. Officials said recent intelligence-based operations helped prevent attempted cross-border entries in Sherpur’s Nalitabari area.
In Dinajpur’s Phulbari border area, BGB has also increased patrols and tightened surveillance following reports of attempted push-ins involving Bengali-speaking individuals from across the border. Officials said the attempts were unsuccessful due to rapid intervention by border forces.
Ongoing diplomatic engagement
BGB officials said the issue of push-ins remains a key agenda item in ongoing discussions with the BSF. Bangladesh maintains that such practices bypass formal deportation procedures and violate established border protocols.
Authorities on both sides are continuing talks, while security measures remain heightened across multiple frontier districts.
