The government is proposing to raise the threshold for excise duty exemption on bank deposits in the budget for fiscal year 2026-27.

Under the proposed measure, account holders with deposits of up to Tk 400,000 will not have to pay any excise duty from the next fiscal year.

Currently, bank customers are exempt from excise duty if the total balance in their accounts does not exceed Tk 300,000 in a year. Deposits ranging from Tk 300,001 to Tk 500,000 are subject to an excise duty of Tk 150.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury is expected to propose increasing the exemption threshold from Tk 300,000 to Tk 400,000, providing relief to a larger number of bank account holders.
