6 arrested over attack on Coast Guard

A case has been filed over an attack and vandalism at a Bangladesh Coast Guard station in the Harbaria area of Jaimonirghol in Mongla upazila of the Sundarbans, and police have arrested six people, including three women.

The case was lodged with Mongla Police Station by the Coast Guard late Thursday night. It names 44 individuals and includes around 250�"300 unidentified people as accused.

Atikur Rahman, Mongla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC), said police conducted drives in different areas and arrested six people by Friday morning in connection with the case. Among the arrested are three women named in the FIR, while the other three male suspects were detained on suspicion, he said.

The arrested six were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Bagerhat on Friday and were sent to jail after the court order.

Police said operations are ongoing in different areas to arrest the remaining accused, and security has been strengthened around the Coast Guard station. The incident took place on Thursday afternoon when unidentified miscreants allegedly attacked and vandalised the Coast Guard station at Harbaria in Jaimonirghol, injuring three Coast Guard personnel.

The Coast Guard claimed that the attack was carried out by vested interests and criminal groups to force their withdrawal from the area and disrupt their operations. According to the force, the attackers also attempted to hamper ongoing operations against forest bandits and other illegal activities in the Sundarbans.�"UNB
