Race on for Nagad ownership

A competition is emerging around Nagad as major local and international business groups show interest in the future ownership structure of one of Bangladesh’s largest digital payment platforms.

Originally launched as a government-backed initiative under the Bangladesh Post Office, Nagad has expanded into a large-scale financial network used by millions for daily transactions. Its rapid growth has turned it from a public-sector innovation into a key component of the country’s digital financial infrastructure, drawing increasing attention from policymakers and investors.

The emerging interest is centred on two main contenders. The Abul Khair Group, one of Bangladesh’s leading industrial conglomerates, is seen as a strong domestic candidate. At the same time, Veon, the Dubai-based global digital operator linked to Banglalink, has reportedly shown interest in a possible role in Nagad’s ownership structure.

VEON operates telecommunications and digital services across several emerging markets and serves hundreds of millions of customers. It owns Banglalink in Bangladesh and has been expanding into fintech and broader digital services beyond traditional telecom operations.

A Bangladesh Bank official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the central bank is aware of the reported interest. “If any such development takes place, Bangladesh Bank will be informed in due course,” the official said, declining to comment further on potential ownership changes.

A Nagad official also confirmed awareness of discussions involving prospective investors but declined to give details. The official, however, said Veon has submitted an application to an adviser to the Prime Minister expressing interest in Nagad.

Currently, Nagad’s ownership rests with its founder, Tanvir Mishuk, while the platform operates under a licence issued by the Bangladesh Post Office. Following political changes, the government appointed an administrator to oversee operations amid allegations of irregularities within the platform.

The platform is currently operating under this administrator-led arrangement aimed at strengthening oversight, reviewing internal systems and ensuring operational stability. Authorities are closely monitoring governance and financial controls as discussions continue over its long-term structure.

Government approval will be the decisive factor in any potential transition. As Nagad operates under the Bangladesh Post Office framework, any change in ownership would require coordination among postal authorities, financial regulators and senior policymakers. Officials have emphasised that user protection, stability and uninterrupted services remain the top priorities.

Industry observers say the outcome could shape the future of Bangladesh’s mobile financial services sector. A domestic industrial group taking a stake could deepen integration between digital payments and local business networks, while a telecom-backed international operator could further connect the sector with regional fintech and digital ecosystems.

At present, no ownership change has been approved and no agreement has been finalised. However, the growing interest highlights Nagad’s evolution from a postal service-led experiment into a strategically important player in Bangladesh’s digital economy.
