50,000 teachers to be appointed in schools within 3-month: Milon

Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon on Monday said the government is working to strengthen the education sector in order to make it economically self-reliant, announcing a move to appoint around 50,000 primary school head and assistant teachers within a span of coming three months.

The education minister made this official announcement while as the chief guest addressing the 20th founding anniversary of Noakhali University of Science and Technology and a Deans and Vice-Chancellor award ceremony.

“Due to ongoing cases of head teachers, 32,000 out of 65,000 head teachers in the country are not getting promotions,” he pointed out, adding, “After I said this in Parliament, the matter came to the attention of the court. It will be resolved on July 2. As a result, we will be able to recruit 50,000 more primary teachers within next three months.”

Referring to examination reforms, he said major changes have been made in this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations. “This time the examination will be held in the nine general education boards of the country with a common question paper,” he said again.

A unified question system will also be used for subjects common across 11 boards, including Madrasa and Technical Education boards.

Reiterating his government’s previous remark the minister said, “Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has given most importance to education in the budget, whose main love affair is education”.

Criticising previous administrations, he pointed out delays in salary payments for madrasa teachers and cited inefficiencies in a financial management project. “Our madrasa teachers are not getting their salaries for May-June. An Electric Fund Transfer Project (ETF) was taken up in 2017. The project of Tk 10 crore has come to Tk 80 crore. But the project is not completed,” he said.

“The last interim government appointed 17,000 madrasa teachers. But since there has been no  automatic fund transfer system. It did not understand how much money should be allocated as  salaries of Madrasa teachers. More than Tk 500 crore is required for Madrasa teachers every month,” he added.
