The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, proposed reducing the tax imposed on private universities from 10 per cent to 5 per cent. However, he said universities must fulfill several conditions to receive this benefit, including ensuring tuition-free education for the poor and meritorious students.
The PM made the proposal while participating in the discussion on the proposed national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the Parliament on Monday, June 29, 2026.
He said, “Private universities currently pay a reduced tax rate of 10 per cent. I propose reducing it from 10 per cent to 5 per cent. However, there will be some conditions in this regard.”
Mentioning that the government is working to make the tax system more transparent and modern, Tarique said the proposed budget also includes proposals to reduce VAT in several sectors.
The PM also said there has been public confusion over the proposal to make the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) certificate mandatory for opening bank accounts, registering partition deeds, and property mutation. He requested that the proposal be withdrawn.
In addition, the PM announced a master plan to excavate and re-excavate 20,000 kilometers of canals across the country over the next five years.
