A Tangail court on Monday sentenced a woman to 13 years of rigorous imprisonment for killing her 18-day-old son and attempting to conceal the crime by dumping the body in a canal.

Judge Md Hafizur Rahman of the Special Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict.

The convict is identified as Ayna Begum, 24, wife of Zahirul Islam of Shibpur Chandanpara village in Mirzapur upazila.

The court sentenced her to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for the murder and an additional three years for concealing the body. She was also fined Tk 40,000, with a further six months' simple imprisonment in default of payment.

According to Public Prosecutor Shafiqul Islam Ripon, Ayna Begum had been staying at her parents' home in Lauhati Madhyapara village under Delduar upazila.

On the morning of August 30, 2020, her husband, Zahirul Islam, was informed that their 18-day-old son, Raihan, had gone missing. After rushing to his in-laws' house and searching the area, he found the infant's body floating in a nearby canal.

Police recovered the body and sent it for an autopsy. The post-mortem report confirmed that the child had been strangled to death.

Following the incident, Zahirul Islam filed a murder case against his wife with Delduar Police Station.

After completing the investigation, Sub-Inspector Monowar Hossain submitted the charge sheet to the court.

The trial began on December 15, 2020, after charges were framed.

Following the testimony of nine prosecution witnesses, the court delivered its verdict on Monday. Ayna Begum was sent to jail after the judgment.
