The local administration on Tuesday imposed Section 144 at Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha district amid fears of a deterioration in the law and order situation over rival political programmes.

The restrictive order was issued after the upazila units of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami announced separate programmes at the same venue on Tuesday.

Confirming the development, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) Sharif Al Rajib, PPM, said the measure was taken to prevent any untoward incident and ensure public safety.

He said the administration feared that holding the two political gatherings at the same place could lead to a serious deterioration in law and order.

According to the police official, Section 144 came into effect at 4:00 PM on Tuesday and will remain in force until 11:00 PM.

The administration urged all concerned to comply with the restrictions to help maintain peace and public order in the area.
