A youth from Rajbari has returned home with bullet wounds after allegedly being trafficked to Iran through an illegal migration network.

Shanto Mondal, son of Md. Shiru Mondal of Kumrirani village under Sawrail Union in Kalukhali upazila, decided to go to abroad for work after recently passing the SSC examination to support his family and his ailing father.

He paid brokers Tk 750,000 to send him abroad, and left Bangladesh for Dubai on April 20. The family alleged that after arriving in Dubai, Shanto was taken to Karachi, Pakistan, where he was held captive and his family was forced to pay an additional Tk 250,000.

He was later smuggled into Iran with several other Bangladeshis through illegal routes.

While travelling to Tehran after crossing Span, the migrants' microbus ignored a stop signal from the Iranian military. As the driver attempted to flee, troops opened fire, injuring Shanto in the left side of his chest and left arm.

With assistance from the Bangladesh Embassy and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), he returned to Bangladesh on June 30.
Doctors removed his spleen and said he would require another Tk 300,000-400,000 for further treatment.

The mother of accused broker Rabiul Islam denied the allegations, claiming her son was not involved. She alleged that another man, Tufan, had arranged the migration and that payments were made to accounts linked to Tufan's family.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalukhali Police Station Mostafa Kamal said no written complaint had yet been filed.

Legal action will be taken upon receiving a formal complaint
