Thousands gathered at Tehran's Grand Mosalla on Sunday as Iran observed a second day of mourning for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, according to the Mehr News Agency.
Mourning ceremonies began early Sunday at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla, the capital's main prayer venue, with people arriving from across the country to pay their final respects. People continued to arrive throughout the morning.
Security personnel, emergency responders, medical teams and volunteers remained on duty to ensure the ceremonies proceeded smoothly, while authorities arranged transport, medical assistance, food and rest facilities for mourners.
Khamenei, who led Iran for nearly 37 years, died at the age of 86 in what Iranian authorities described as a joint US-Israeli attack on February 28.
Red flags, regarded by many Shia Muslims as symbols of vengeance, were displayed at Tehran's Grand Mosalla and other locations during the funeral ceremonies. The ceremonies were held under the slogan "We Must Rise", while a portrait of Khamenei with a raised clenched fist was displayed in Tehran.
State media footage showed crowds at several Tehran metro stations chanting anti-US and anti-Israel slogans.
Authorities tightened security Tehran for the week-long mourning period, deploying armoured vehicles, heavy machine guns and snipers around the ceremony venue.
