Swechhasebak Dal leader shot in Mirpur, suspect held with firearm

A local leader of the Swechhasebak Dal was shot and injured in the capital's Mirpur-10  area on Tuesday night.

The injured, Saiful Islam Siju, 40, joint convener of Mirpur Thana Swechhasebak Dal, sustained bullet wounds to his waist and both legs, said Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Model Police Station Md Hafizur Rahman .

Saidul, a neighbour who took Siju to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the victim was standing in front of his office on Munshi Bari Road when a group of three to five men, allegedly led by Zakir Hossain Shanto, 27, opened fire indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured around 9:15 pm.

Locals chased the attackers as  they attempted to escape and managed to catch one of them , Shanto Bhuiyan, with a firearm .
He was handed over to Mirpur Model Police Station.

Police said the shooting stemmed from previous enmity.
