162 soldiers to receive retro promotions, service benefits

Around 162 former members of the Bangladesh Army who were dismissed or discharged from service are set to receive retrospective promotions or service-related benefits following a review of their cases, as a form of transitional justice, according to officials familiar with the process.

Nearly 500 additional applications remain under such examination.

Sources at the Ministry of Defence said more than 1,300 dismissed or discharged soldiers had applied, alleging they were
victims of discrimination or unjust termination and seeking reinstatement or retrospective promotions and other benefits.

A screening board reviewed the applications through several stages and found around 850 cases to be eligible for further consideration, the sources said.

In the first phase, a review committee examined approximately 350 applications and approved retrospective promotions or other service benefits for more than 160 former soldiers. Ministry sources said some of the beneficiaries have already started receiving retirement and other post-service entitlements, while the remaining recipients are expected to receive their benefits soon.

The remaining nearly 500 applications that passed the initial screening are currently under review, the sources added.
According to the ministry, each application underwent multiple stages of scrutiny, including verification of the reasons behind the applicants' dismissal or discharge from service.

The review reportedly found that some applicants had previously lost their jobs over allegations involving drug abuse, extramarital relationships and other forms of misconduct. Despite this, they later applied for reinstatement or retrospective benefits, claiming they had been subjected to discrimination or unfair treatment.

The ministry sources further claimed that some former soldiers who are currently attempting to organise protest programmes include individuals who had been dismissed over such allegations.

Officials expressed concern that protest activities could delay or complicate the implementation of benefits for those whose applications have already been recommended by the review committee.

The Ministry of Defence has not yet announced when the review of the remaining applications is expected to be completed.
