KHULNA, July 10: Three active members of the notorious “Boro Jahangir” pirate gang surrendered to the Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) at Kolamuli Khal adjacent to the Tambulbunia Forest Office under Sarankhola Upazila of Bagerhat District on Wednesday, while a hostage fisherman was rescued and firearms and ammunition were recovered, according to a BCG statement issued on Thursday.
BCG Media Officer Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said the pirates handed over two locally made single-barrel guns, one pipe gun, 40 rounds of live cartridges and one walkie-talkie.
The surrendered pirates are Al-Amin Hossain, 40, of Mongla Upazila in Bagerhat, Taibur Rahman, 24, of Tala Upazila in Satkhira, and Moniruzzaman Mamun, 20, of Koyra Upazila in Khulna.
In a message, BCG Commander Md Mansurun Mahdin urged all active pirate groups in the Sundarban to surrender and return to normal life, assuring rehabilitation opportunities for those who lay down their arms. He warned that those continuing criminal activities would face strict action under the government’s zero-tolerance policy.
