At least five people were killed after a passenger bus ploughed into a crowd on the Dhaka�"Khulna highway in Faridpur's Bhanga upazila on Saturday night. The incident sparked public outrage, with locals setting fire to at least six vehicles, including the bus involved in the crash.
Faridpur, Bangladesh, July 11: At least five people were killed after a passenger bus ran over a group of people on the Dhaka�"Khulna highway in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur district on Saturday night.
The accident occurred around 8:00 pm near the Soyadi Bus Stand area. All of the deceased were local residents, according to police.
Police and local sources said a pickup van carrying eggs overturned on the highway at around 7:45 pm, scattering eggs across the road. As several local residents gathered to collect the eggs, a speeding passenger bus, Narail Express, rammed into the crowd.
Several people were killed on the spot and many others were injured. Members of the Bhanga Highway Police rushed to the scene, launched a rescue operation, and recovered five bodies.
The tragic incident triggered anger among local residents, who set fire to the Narail Express bus along with at least five other vehicles. Law enforcement personnel later arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Helal Uddin of Bhanga Highway Police Station said five bodies had been recovered so far, while rescue operations were still underway. He added that the death toll could rise as several of the injured remain in critical condition.
