Questions have been raised over the continuation of quota-based admissions at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), the campus of Abu Sayeed, who was killed during the 2024 anti-quota movement.

The issue emerged after the university's admission notice for the 2025"26 academic session confirmed that seats would be filled under several government-approved quotas, including freedom fighter, indigenous, persons with disabilities and employee-dependent (poshya) quotas.

Some students, particularly those opposing the employee-dependent quota, criticised the decision, arguing that it contradicts the spirit of the anti-quota movement, which called for a more merit-based and equitable admission system.

Shamsur Rahman Sumon, a BRUR student and one of Abu Sayeed's fellow protesters, said retaining the employee-dependent quota at the university was unacceptable and warned of tougher programmes if the policy was not reviewed.

Another student, Jahid Hasan Joy, said the university should adopt a transparent and fair admission process that ensures merit while implementing constitutionally recognised affirmative measures for disadvantaged groups.

Responding to the criticism, Prof Dr Md Ferdous Rahman, member secretary of the admission committee and acting registrar, said the quota system had been adopted following a decision of the university's central admission committee and was similar to that of many other universities.

He added that the policy could be reconsidered if concerns over the issue persist.
