Education and Primary Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has declined to comment immediately on the ongoing student protests demanding his resignation, saying he would speak on the issue later as he was attending a parliamentary session.
"I am in the parliament now. I will comment later," the minister said when contacted by phone on Tuesday.
When asked for his reaction to the nationwide demonstrations by HSC candidates, Milon replied, "This is not the time for an interview. Should I give an interview or answer questions in parliament? I will speak about the matter after the parliamentary question-and-answer session."
The remarks came as hundreds of protesting HSC candidates continued their demonstration in the Nilkhet-TSC area of Dhaka University, demanding the minister's resignation and raising several other demands over the conduct of this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the protesters were occupying the Nilkhet-TSC road while police maintained a position in front of them. Activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal were also seen in the area, creating a face-to-face situation on the campus.
The protests began on Monday when students blocked the Science Laboratory intersection in the capital for nearly an hour in protest against holding HSC examinations amid heavy rainfall and widespread waterlogging. They later marched towards Dhaka University.
When police attempted to disperse the demonstrators near the VC Chattar, the students moved to the Nilkhet-TSC road and continued their sit-in, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcers.
Authorities later deployed members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), alongside police, in the Dhaka University area to maintain law and order.
By around 2:30pm, the protesters marched towards the Dhaka Education Board office, where they continued their programme.
