Kaaba witnesses rare solar alignment

The Kaaba witnessed a rare astronomical event on Wednesday as the Sun passed directly overhead, an alignment that occurs only twice a year and is widely used to accurately determine the direction of the Qibla.

The phenomenon occurred at 12:26:44 pm local time in Makkah, when the Sun reached a near-90-degree angle directly above the Kaaba.

Majed Abu Zahra, president of the Jeddah Astronomical Society, said that at the exact moment of the alignment, anyone in locations where the Sun was visible above the horizon could determine the Qibla by observing the shadow of a vertically placed object, which pointed in the direction opposite the Kaaba.

The report noted that the method is particularly useful for people living far from Makkah, while those in nearby cities such as Jeddah can use it to verify the accuracy of their existing Qibla direction.

Astronomers said the phenomenon occurs because the Sun's apparent position aligns with Makkah's latitude, making it a reliable natural reference for determining the Qibla.
