Bangladeshi student develops app to save snakebite victims

A Bangladeshi student has developed a mobile application named ‘Snake & Wildlife Rescue BD’ to curb the rising number of snakebite fatalities across the country.

The developer, Nurul Arefin Nabil, created the non-profit platform to address the severe lack of awareness and authentic information regarding snakebites and wildlife preservation.

According to government statistics, over 7,500 people die from snakebites annually in Bangladesh. Experts note that many victims succumb because they seek treatment from traditional healers (Ojhas) instead of rushing to hospitals.

The newly launched application, currently available on the Google Play Store, provides step-by-step emergency first-aid guidelines for snakebite victims.

Crucially, the app includes a comprehensive directory of government hospitals, their contact numbers, and real-time updates on anti-venom availability. It also connects users with a nationwide network of certified and trained snake rescuers.

To aid quick identification, the app features an AI-powered tool that recognizes snake species from photographs, categorizing them into venomous, non-venomous, and mildly venomous types. It also hosts an AI chatbot for instant assistance and features a real-time database tracking snakebite fatalities.

The developer expressed hope that the app would help eradicate dangerous superstitions and guide people toward timely medical care, ultimately saving lives during this peak season.
