NBR opens e-return window for 2026-27 tax year

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) launched its e-return service for individual taxpayers for the 2026-2027 tax year on Wednesday, making online filing mandatory for most taxpayers.


The revenue board said the move aims to make tax services simpler, faster and more transparent. The online system, introduced in 2021, has grown steadily popular, with a record 4.7 million individual taxpayers filing returns through it in the 2025-2026 tax year.

Under a special order, online filing is now compulsory for all individual taxpayers. However, taxpayers aged 65 and above, physically challenged or special-needs persons with valid certificates, Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, representatives of deceased taxpayers and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh may submit paper returns instead. 

Taxpayers unable to register on the system due to technical problems can also file paper returns with approval from the concerned additional or joint commissioner of taxes.

Returns can be filed and dues paid at www.etaxnbr.gov.bd through bank transfers, debit and credit cards, bKash, Rocket, Nagad and other mobile financial services. Taxpayers will receive instant acknowledgement receipts and tax certificates upon submission.

The NBR call centre (09643717171) will assist taxpayers during office hours, excluding government holidays.

Those filing returns between July and September will get a five percent incentive on net payable tax, capped at Tk 25,000. No incentive applies after September, and returns filed after December will attract additional tax.
