Outgoing President Mohammed Shahabuddin has created a unique record in Bangladesh’s political history by administering the oath of office to three different governments within a span of just three years.
On February 17, President Shahabuddin administered the oath of office to Tarique Rahman as the new Prime Minister at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. He also swore in the ministers and state ministers of the government led by Tarique Rahman.
Earlier, in 2024, President Shahabuddin had administered the oath to the government led by Sheikh Hasina following the national election. However, that government was ousted on August 5, 2024, amid a student-led mass movement.
On August 8, 2024, he again administered the oath to the interim government formed under Nobel laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus.
As a result, Shahabuddin became the only president in Bangladesh’s history to swear in three separate governments in consecutive years - 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Before him, former President Md Abdul Hamid, during his 10-year tenure from 2013 to 2023, administered the oath to two full-fledged governments or cabinets led by Sheikh Hasina.
