Bangladesh Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will hold an emergency press conference on Friday afternoon amid mounting speculation over the possible resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, according to parliamentary sources.

The press conference is scheduled to take place at 5:00 pm in the oath-taking room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Although no official agenda has been announced, sources within the Parliament Secretariat said the briefing was convened in connection with the President.

A senior Parliament Secretariat official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the emergency briefing concerns the President, raising expectations that an important announcement may follow.

Earlier on Friday, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed returned to Bangladesh from Thailand, where he had undergone medical treatment and health check-ups, two days ahead of his scheduled return.

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the Speaker said he was unaware of any decision regarding the President’s resignation.

“I do not know what the President will do or not do. He is the first citizen of the country. I was abroad, so I have no information about who resigned or what happened. Perhaps I will know now,” he said.

When asked about the constitutional procedure in the event of the President’s resignation, the Speaker explained that the President would submit a resignation letter to the Speaker, after which Parliament would elect a new President within 90 days.

He also noted that under the Constitution, if the office of the President falls vacant, the Speaker assumes the role of Acting President until a new President is elected by Parliament within three months.

The Speaker had left for Bangkok on July 19 for medical treatment. During his absence, speculation over President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s possible resignation intensified in political circles. His early return has further fueled the discussions.

For the past several days, widespread speculation has circulated regarding the President’s possible resignation, although no official confirmation has yet been issued by the Presidency or the government.
