Oppn Chief Whip calls for special allocations for haor habitants

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam called for special government allocations and a comprehensive development plan for the country's haor region, urging lawmakers to witness first hand the hardships faced by its residents and raise their concerns in Parliament.

“I think all 300 Members of Parliament need to come and see how much the people of the haors suffer,” Nahid said while addressing the 'Desh Garte July Padajatra' programme at Khaliajuri in Netrokona on Friday.
Describing the haor region as long neglected, he said the government should formulate targeted development initiatives, including the promotion of tourism and the creation of alternative employment opportunities.

“We want the government to make special allocations and plans for the neglected people of the haor area. It is possible to develop tourism here to develop the haor in a special way,” he said.

Highlighting infrastructural deficiencies, Nahid said, “There is no broadband here, no dish, nothing. Alternative employment opportunities need to be developed in the haor. We want the public representatives to raise the problems of the haor in Parliament.”

Referring to the July Charter, the NCP convener alleged that the authorities had failed to honour their political commitment despite assuming office on the strength of the July movement.

“The government came to power using the July spirit, but did not implement the July Charter. This cannot happen,” he said.
