Violence against women, girls rises by 12pc: Mahila Parishad     

 
Violence against women and girls in the country increased by 11.2 percent in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to a survey by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.

A total of 2,808 incidents of violence against women and girls were recorded in 2025, up from 2,525 in 2024.

The findings were presented in a survey report titled “Pictures of Violence against Women and Girls in Bangladesh-2025” at a press conference held at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of the National Press Club on Monday.

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad Senior Training and Research Officer Afroza Arman said the survey was conducted based on reports of violence against women and girls published in 14 national daily newspapers.

The survey analysed different forms of violence, including rape, gang rape, attempted rape, sexual harassment and molestation, murder, suicide and child marriage.

An analysis of the last five years shows that 3,703 incidents of violence against women and girls were recorded in 2021. The number fell to 3,035 in 2022 and 2,937 in 2023. It declined further to 2,525 in 2024. However, the downward trend reversed in 2025, when the number increased to 2,808.

The survey said that although rape cases decreased slightly in 2025 compared to the previous year, the situation remained worrying in several areas, including murder, sexual harassment and molestation.
