Asif Mahmud kicks off campaign for DSCC polls

National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan has informally launched his campaign ahead of the forthcoming Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election, pledging to restore the capital's historical identity, heritage and distinct character.

In a post published on his verified Facebook page on Monday night, Asif Mahmud said Dhaka should not be viewed through the prism of other global cities, arguing that it possesses a civilisation and heritage older and richer than many historic cities around the world.

“Many people talk about developing Dhaka on the model of Singapore, Bangkok or London. But Dhaka itself is a city with an older and richer heritage than many historical cities in the world,” he wrote. He alleged that successive policymakers had failed to properly present and preserve the capital's historical legacy, adding that Dhaka had once been “one of the heartlands of South Asia” and a prosperous city situated in the fertile delta.
