Two die while waiting for TCB subsidised food in Mirpur

 
Two people were killed and six others injured after a boundary wall of Mirpur University College collapsed onto a queue of people waiting to buy subsidised Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) goods in the capital’s Mirpur-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

The wall, located at the rear of the college, suddenly gave way at around 1:30pm, burying several people beneath piles of bricks and debris, police said.
The deceased were identified as Nasima Begum, a resident of Janata Housing, and an unidentified man believed to be about 40 years old.

According to Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Model Police Station, eight people were trapped when the wall collapsed on customers lined up to purchase TCB products.

"There was a loud bang. One of our mobile patrol teams was nearby, and officers rushed to the scene immediately. With the help of local residents, we cleared the debris and rescued those trapped underneath," he said.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Doctors at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) declared Nasima Begum dead on arrival, while another injured man later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. A woman remained in critical condition at DMCH, police said. The remaining victims are receiving treatment.

Police said the site hosts regular TCB sales, attracting long queues of low-income residents seeking essential commodities at subsidised prices.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse. Police said further details would be available after the debris is cleared and the structural failure is examined.
