Rohingya boat capsizes off Teknaf: 18 rescued, 13 missing

A boat carrying Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar capsized off the Shahparir Dwip coast in Teknaf on Friday.

Local fishermen rescued 18 survivors and handed them over to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), while at least 13 others remain missing.

The incident took place around 8:00AM near the Shahparir Dwip Paschimpara boat ghat area, confirmed Abdul Mannan, acting chairman of Sabrang Union Parishad.

He said the victims were attempting to enter Bangladesh to escape ongoing clashes between Myanmar's government forces and the rebel group Arakan Army in Rakhine State when their boat sank near the shore.

Md Ismail, a local fisherman from Paschimpara, said the boat was carrying 31 passengers when it overturned. "We managed to rescue 18 people, but 13 others are still missing. There were no women or children among those rescued," he added.

Teknaf 2 BGB Battalion Commander Lt Col Hanifur Rahman Bhuiyan confirmed that 18 rescued Rohingya are currently in BGB custody.

A detailed update will be provided after investigating the circumstances surrounding their arrival, the official added.
