22 granted bail in DNCC worker assault cases

A Dhaka court on Monday granted bail to 22 accused, including retired Colonel Zakir Hossain, in two cases filed over the alleged assault on Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) sanitation workers and obstruction of police duties in Uttarkhan.

Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the order after hearing the bail petitions.

The cases stem from a clash on Sunday in the Uttarkhan Secondary Transfer Station (STS) area, where several DNCC sanitation workers were allegedly assaulted. Police who responded to the incident also came under attack and were allegedly obstructed while performing their duties.

One case was filed by a supervisor of a DNCC-appointed contractor, naming 39 people and 250-300 unidentified individuals over the attack on sanitation workers. A second case was filed by a sub-inspector of Uttarkhan Police Station over the alleged assault on police and obstruction of official duties.

Police later arrested 22 people, including retired Colonel Zakir Hossain, a director of Neptune Accessories Ltd. The court ordered that the accused be shown arrested in the assault case before granting them bail in both cases following a hearing.
