27 JSD leaders sent to jail as court rejects bail pleas

A Dhaka court on Monday denied bail to 27 people arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure following a police raid on the central office of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter passed the order after a hearing, saying the matter needed to be investigated.
The 27 were arrested after police raided the Jasad office in Gulistan on Saturday and detained several hundred people for questioning. After screening, police showed 27 of them arrested under Section 54 and released the remaining 249 on Sunday.
Police alleged that the detainees had gathered at the office, chanted “Joy Bangla” and created an unstable situation. They also claimed they had information that leaders and activists of the banned Awami League had gathered there for possible subversive activities.
The accused were produced before the court on Sunday and sent to jail. Their bail hearing was fixed for Monday.
During Monday’s hearing, defence lawyers Nilanjana Rifat, Taslima Jahan Popi and others sought bail, while prosecutors Mohammad Shamsuddoha Sumon and Harun-or-Rashid opposed the pleas. The court subsequently rejected the bail applications.
JSD, however, said the gathering was a representative meeting organised with police permission and denied the presence of Awami League activists. The party’s office secretary Sazzad Hossain alleged that BNP and Jubo Dal activists attacked the meeting before police intervened and detained Jasad activists.
