10 injured in Barishal University clash between JCD, Shibir activists

At least 10 people were injured in a clash between activists of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir at the University of Barishal on Wednesday.

The violence broke out between 9:30am and 10:30am over a procession organised by Chhatra Shibir marking the July Uprising Day.

Both organisations blamed each other for the incident.

JCD leaders alleged that Shibir activists attacked their members after being asked not to bring outsiders to the campus programme. They claimed five to six of their activists were injured.

Rejecting the allegation, Shibir leaders said their peaceful procession came under attack by JCD activists while heading towards the Vice-Chancellor’s building, leaving at least five of their members injured. They said a written complaint had been submitted to the university authorities seeking justice.

Following the clash, police deployed an additional 30 personnel on the campus to prevent further unrest, said Barishal Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Belal Hossain.

University Proctor Mehedi Hasan said the administration was busy ensuring treatment for the injured students and would provide further details later.
