Kaukhali Market, the largest betel nut hub in Pirojpur district, comes alive at dawn with intense bargaining between buyers and sellers. Owing to their appealing color and large size, betel nuts from this region enjoy high demand nationwide, with wholesalers transporting the produce across the country.

The betel nut trade at Kaukhali Market provides livelihoods for around a hundred individuals, earning them between Tk 1,000 and Tk 3,000 daily. However, lower market prices this season have placed pressure on their income.

According to data from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), betel nut has been cultivated on 4,669 hectares of land in the district during the current season. The production target has been fixed at 18,676 metric tonnes, with an estimated market value ranging between Tk 840 crore and Tk 930 crore.

Despite the expanded acreage, betel nut yields across seven upazilas, including Pirojpur Sadar, Kaukhali, and Nesarabad, have dropped compared to last year. Although demand in large wholesale markets remains relatively low, strong local market demand has allowed growers to fetch decent prices. Nonetheless, lower overall production has left farmers worried about achieving desired profit margins.

The market lessee noted that low toll charges at Kaukhali Market continue to attract a growing number of buyers and sellers. Meanwhile, the agriculture department is providing technical guidance and support to farmers regarding proper orchard maintenance.

Transactions worth millions of taka take place at the Kaukhali market twice a week, on Fridays and Mondays. Despite the vibrant trading environment, local growers remain disheartened over the decline in total yield.
