World Indigenous Peoples Day celebrated in Madhupur with various arrangements

The Garo, Koch and Burman communities of the Garandhanchal celebrated World Indigenous Peoples Day in Madhupur, Tangail with various arrangements under the theme Rights, Dignity and Sustainable Development of Indigenous Peoples.
On Sunday (August 9) morning, the day was inaugurated by ACDF President Ajay A. Mr., jointly organized by 17 organizations including Joyenshahi Adivasi Unnayan Parishad, Caritas, Achik Michik Society at Bhutia High School grounds. After the inauguration by flying pigeons at 10 am, a colorful procession took out and circled the Dokhla square and ended at the meeting venue.
Later, the cultural program was filled with Garo traditional dances and Mandi songs in different colorful costumes. A charming scene emerged in the team-based competitions of different villages.
The discussion meeting was chaired by Eugene Nokrek, President of Joyenshahi Adivasi Unnayan Parishad, and was addressed by Mrigen Hagidok, President of Bangladesh Minority Development Party Central Committee, Zakir Hossain, Executive Director of Nagorik Udyog, M Ratan Haider, Vice President of Madhupur Upazila BNP, Advocate John Jetra, General Secretary of Joyenshahi Adivasi Unnayan Parishad, Ranjit Nokrek, Chairman of TWB, Sulekha ¤rong, Executive
Director of Achik Michik Society and many others. The main discussant of the event was indigenous writer and researcher Theophil Nokrek. The event was hosted by Marjina Chisim and Nirjon Simsang.
Thousands of people from different classes and professions, including women, men and children from different villages of Madhupur forest area, participated in the event.
The speakers at the discussion meeting demanded the formation of a separate land commission for the indigenous people of the plains, constitutional recognition and establishment of a separate ministry. They said that the land problems of the tribals including Garo and Koch in the plains including Madhupur are long-standing, and they demand that the current government resolve them quickly.
