20 injured as passenger bus plunges into roadside ditch in Habiganj

At least 20 people were injured when a passenger bus lost control and fell into a roadside ditch in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj on Sunday afternoon. No fatalities were reported as the bus was travelling at a relatively low speed.
The accident occurred around 3:30pm in the Andiura area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
According to eyewitnesses, the Dhaka-bound Bilash Paribahan bus was passing through the area when one of its wheels sank into soft soil beside the under-construction highway. The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and fall into a ditch.
Passengers panicked following the accident. Several sustained minor injuries, while others reportedly fell ill due to the impact and shock.
Locals said ongoing six-lane expansion work on different sections of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway has left stretches of roadside soil soft and muddy. Continuous rainfall over the past few days has further increased the risk for vehicles travelling through the construction zones.
Residents have called for the highway construction work to be completed quickly and safely, along with the installation of warning signs, adequate lighting and stronger traffic management at hazardous points. They warned that without additional safety measures during the rainy season, similar incidents could lead to more serious accidents.
Shubho Ranjan Chakma, officer-in-charge of the Shayestaganj Highway Police Station, said the bus went off the road after one of its wheels sank into a soft section of the under-construction highway, causing the driver to lose control.
Madhabpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Faruk Mia said no one was killed because the bus was moving at a low speed. Around 20 passengers suffered minor injuries and were rescued and taken to a safe location. They were later sent to their destinations in another vehicle.
