Farmers block highway in Lalmonirhat over fertilizer shortage, high prices

Hundreds of Aman farmers blocked the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway in Kaliganj upazila on Monday morning, protesting the alleged shortage of fertilizer at government-fixed prices, causing a long tailback on both sides of the highway.

The farmers took position at Kaliganj Bazar around the morning, bringing traffic to a standstill for nearly two hours. Trucks carrying stones and other goods, along with passenger vehicles, remained stranded, causing significant inconvenience to commuters and drivers.

The protesting farmers alleged that adequate fertilizer was not being supplied according to demand during the Aman cultivation season, forcing them to purchase fertilizer at prices much higher than those fixed by the government.

They said a 50kg sack of TSP fertilizer, fixed at Tk 1,350, was being sold for up to Tk 2,200. Similarly, DAP fertilizer, whose government-fixed price is Tk 1,050 per sack, was being sold for Tk 1,700-Tk 1,800. Urea, fixed at Tk 1,350 per sack, was also allegedly being sold for up to Tk 1,800.

The farmers said the inflated fertilizer prices were increasing their production costs and could cause losses. They also feared that inadequate or delayed fertilizer supplies could reduce Aman yields.

Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Saiful Islam and police went to the spot and spoke with the protesting farmers. The UNO assured them that fertilizer would be distributed according to their demand within the next two days.

Following the assurance, the farmers withdrew from the highway after about two hours, and traffic movement returned to normal.

The farmers, however, warned that they would resume the blockade if adequate fertilizer was not supplied at government-fixed prices within the next two days.
