The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested the prime accused in a case filed over the alleged hacking and beating of a college teacher in Lalmonirhat’s Aditmari for protesting against online gambling.

The accused, Md Rahidul Islam, 45, was arrested from the Nayatola area under Hatirjheel Police Station in Dhaka at around 8:30pm on Wednesday in a joint operation by RAB-13, Rangpur, and RAB-3, according to a press release issued by RAB-13 on Thursday.

Rahidul is the son of late Anwar Hossain of Gandhamaruya (Singimari) village under Durgapur Union in Aditmari upazila.

According to RAB, the case statement alleges that Rahidul, Hasan Ali, Masud Ali and several others had been operating online gambling and casino activities in the Gandhamaruya area for a long time. College teacher Ariful Islam had reportedly been raising awareness among locals against gambling and asking those involved to stop. He had also warned them that he would inform police if they continued the activities.

The teacher was allegedly attacked on August 1 while returning home from college. The attackers reportedly beat him with iron rods and hacked him with sharp weapons, causing serious injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

Ariful was initially admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was later shifted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment.

On August 2, the injured teacher’s father filed an attempted murder case with Aditmari Police Station, naming 10 people as accused.

RAB said the accused went into hiding to evade arrest after the case was filed. Considering the seriousness of the case, RAB-13 launched intelligence surveillance to locate them.

Acting on specific information, a joint team of RAB-13 and RAB-3 conducted an operation in Nayatola and arrested Rahidul, RAB said.

The elite force said Rahidul was handed over to the concerned police station for further legal action.
