Two passengers of an auto-rickshaw were killed and three others, including a woman, were seriously injured after a truck rammed the vehicle in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat on Saturday afternoon.
The accident occurred around 3pm at the Sonali Bank Suchona Chattar area on the Dhaka-Burimari highway.
The deceased were identified as Zahurul, 50, of West Sardubi area under Ward 1 of Barakhata Union, and Abdul Jalil, 50, son of Mohammad Ali of Singimari area.
Witnesses said a truck travelling from Lalmonirhat hit the auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction. The truck dragged the auto-rickshaw for some distance before crashing into a motorcycle showroom beside the road.
The auto-rickshaw was badly damaged, while several motorcycles at the showroom were also damaged. The two passengers died on the spot.
Locals rescued the three injured passengers and took them to Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex, where they are undergoing treatment. Locals also detained the truck after the accident.
Hatibandha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ashrafuzzaman Sarker confirmed the accident and casualties, saying a police team was at the scene.
