Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has appointed its National Standing Commi-ttee member, Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, as the party’s acting secretary general.

Muhammad Munir Hossain, BNP’s assistant office secretary, confirmed the development in a message on Thursday (August 20).

According to the message, Rizvi was appointed under Article 7(kha)(6) of the BNP constitution. The appointment will take effect immediately.

Rizvi succeeds Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who had been serving as the BNP secretary general before being elected President. Fakhrul stepped down from the post after being nominated by the party for the presidency.

Rizvi's ancestral home is in Kurigram district. He studied at the University of Rajshahi, earning degrees in Geography and Environmental Studies and History, and later obtained a bachelor's degree in law.

Rizvi began his political career through the left-leaning Revolutionary Students' Union after completing his higher secondary education. He served as general secretary of the Rajshahi Government College unit of the organisation.

Following the establishment of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the BNP's student wing, Rizvi joined the organisation and was initially appointed publicity secretary of its Rajshahi University unit. He later became general secretary of the unit and subsequently served as president of the central committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

In the 1989 election of the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU), Rizvi was elected vice-president (VP), a position he held until 1990. At BNP's sixth national council on March 19, 2016, he was elected senior joint secretary general of the party. During the 2026 national parliamentary election, Rizvi served as member secretary of BNP's election steering committee.

Most recently, on August 15, 2026, he was appointed a member of the BNP National Standing Committee, the party's highest policymaking body. His latest appointment as acting secretary general marks another significant step in his long political career within the BNP.
