China has congratulated BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on being elected as the 23rd President of Bangladesh, expressing hope for further strengthening relations between the two countries.

The Chinese Embassy in Dhaka conveyed the congratulatory message in a statement on Thursday (August 20).

In the message, China said it attaches great importance to Bangladesh-China relations and is ready to work closely with Bangladesh to build a shared future for the two countries in the new era.

Beijing also expressed hope that greater mutual cooperation would bring more benefits to the two countries and their peoples.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected the country’s 23rd President through a vote by members of Parliament. The BNP candidate secured 255 votes, while Oli Ahmed, the candidate of the 11-party alliance, received 88 votes.
