Artificial intelligence is becoming part of our everyday lives, from creating images and summarising books to helping detect diseases. Yet behind every instant response lies a hidden cost - electricity, water and enormous computing power. AI systems depend on data centres that operate around the clock, consuming large amounts of electricity and water. As AI grows, so does its environmental footprint, increasing carbon emissions, putting pressure on water resources.
So, must nature alone pay the price for technological progress?
This is where Green AI comes in. It aims to develop and use AI in ways that consume less energy and resources while producing fewer carbon emissions. Smaller, optimised models, Edge AI, energy-efficient chips, renewable energy and improved cooling systems can reduce AI’s environmental impact. Green AI can therefore make technology not only smarter, but also cleaner and more sustainable.
