Pakistan army chief to visit Tehran amid Iran-US tensions

Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir is set to visit Tehran on Monday as Islamabad continues efforts to promote peace and security in the Middle East.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei confirmed the visit in a statement on Sunday. Two Pakistani government sources also confirmed the trip to Reuters.
Pakistan has been mediating between Iran and the United States in efforts to end the conflict that began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February.
One of the Pakistani sources said Munir would discuss the ongoing tensions between Tehran and Washington, including US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tougher sanctions on Iran.
The talks are also expected to cover the Islamabad agreement, Trump’s warning, developments following agreements involving Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, and the crisis involving the Houthis, the source said.
The visit comes as tensions between Iran and the US continue to rise. Tehran has threatened military action in response to Washington’s planned sanctions aimed at putting further pressure on Iran’s fragile economy.
The United States is expected to formally announce details of the proposed sanctions on Monday. US officials have described them as potentially the toughest sanctions ever imposed on Iran.
Trump has warned that countries providing assistance to Iran or helping it evade the sanctions could also face economic consequences.
Meanwhile, oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have been severely disrupted amid threats from Tehran to target unauthorised oil tankers attempting to pass through the strategic waterway.
