Kuwait seeks expanded defence cooperation with India

Kuwait has expressed interest in expanding defence cooperation with India, days after signing a defence agreement with Pakistan.

A five-member high-level Kuwaiti military delegation held talks with India's Ministry of Defence in New Delhi on Friday on a possible broader defence cooperation agreement.

India's delegation was led by Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad and included representatives from the armed forces, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Armed Forces Medical Services and the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Kuwaiti delegation was led by Brigadier General Raed Al Sakran.

An Indian defence ministry official told PTI that India and Kuwait had signed a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kuwait in December 2024.

The two countries now want to expand that understanding into a broader agreement, the official said.

The final terms have not yet been decided. However, the proposed agreement may cover military training and exercises, medicines for the armed forces, defence industry cooperation, and research into weapons and military equipment.

On August 27, Kuwait signed a defence cooperation agreement, named the “Protocol Agreement-2026”, with Pakistan in Islamabad.

The Kuwaiti military said the agreement aimed to significantly strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the defence and military sectors.
